Today it was a great day!!!!

It was April 1st, and the rent was due at Results.

Most people and other business owners have suggested to call my landlord and explain the situation. Some of them even suggested to call him and simply tell him that I am not going to pay. They even added, “He cannot do anything to you.” Others alluded to the fact that he might be in the same situation I was in.

I was never put in this situation before. I’ve always paid my rent on time and in full. Now, like no other time, I had a big dilemma. What should I do?

DO I follow the trend and forfeit payment due to the Corona Virus shutdown or pay him in full?

Should I listen to others, or should I listen to my own gut feelings?

I ended up paying as much as I had, from the beginning of the month to the date I interrupted the gym activity. I did what felt right to me. I sent him a check for 33% of the rent I owed for Results Personal Training space on Woodman Avenue.

Today, eight days have passed by and I still haven’t heard from my landlord. That is very unusual. My landlord reminds me of my grandfather. Tough and stubborn. Punctual and rigid.

I bought Results on April 1st, 2006, and this year, just a few days ago, it was my 14th anniversary.

My landlord and I have known each other for almost fifteen years, and I don’t think we spoke to each other more than a dozen times. It is either because communication isn’t one of his best qualities or because my level of understanding is extremely low. To put it in few words, we have a unique and interesting relationship. Therefore, I didn’t feel the need to call him to point out the obvious. So, I just sent him the check.

For the past eight days I’ve been expecting either a phone call with very little patience on the other line or for him to show up in person to hand me the letter. That is how my landlord used to “mail” me letters in the past. In either case, both meetings would never end with a handshake and that’s definitely not because of social distancing.

However, today the anxiety I lived with and never knew I had for the last seven days have disappeared. I didn’t get a call, but I did get a letter mailed to the gym since he couldn’t deliver it in person.

My landlord, for the first time in almost fifteen years, showed me the human side of him. Today it truly felt like my grandpa finally acknowledged me for all the good work I did for the last fourteen years. In one of the emails that followed the letter I received, my stubborn landlord wrote: You’re excellent.

That’s BIG. This is HUGE.

Today it felt like I’ve squeezed blood from a rock.

It literally felt like a pat on the back, like a breath of fresh air, like a ray of sunshine.

Today it was a good day!!!!

Today I felt what HOPE is all about!!

Today, by simply listening to my instincts, my good deeds paid off.

It felt really good and comforting to know that my landlord understands what we’re all going through and showed me some love when I needed it the most. Today, again, it was a great day.

I lost one yesterday, but I won one today.

Tomorrow we start all over again.

Take one day at a time, one hour at a time, one minute at a time.

Staying mentally and physically active is critical. It not only helps us manage these challenging times, it will also help us come out of them better than before.
